HINDI SUMMARY OF THE STORY
एक गाँव में एक मेहनती जोड़ा रहता था। एक रात, जब पति दिन भर की कड़ी मेहनत के बाद सो रहा था, तो पत्नी बिस्तर पर बैठी अपना भोजन समाप्त कर रही थी।
पति ने जम्हाई ली और कहा, “ओह! कितना थका देने वाला दिन था! मुझे बहुत नींद आ रही है।”
तभी पत्नी को एक हल्की-सी आवाज़ सुनाई दी। वह चौंक गई और अपने पति को चुप रहने का इशारा करते हुए बोली, “श्शश! सुनो!”
पति घबराकर उठ बैठा। उसे भी अब कुछ खड़खड़ाहट सुनाई दे रही थी। वह बोला, “कोई अंदर आने की कोशिश कर रहा है।”
पत्नी ने फुसफुसाते हुए कहा, “मुझे लगता है कि वह पहले ही अंदर आ चुका है… आवाज़ बंद हो गई है।”
पति डर के मारे अपने कम्बल में दुबक गया और बोला, “लेट जाओ… देखो मत! यह ज़रूर कोई चोर है। उसे किसी तरह गाँव के कोतवाल राम को चकमा देकर अंदर आना पड़ा होगा।”
चोर, जो दीवार में सेंध लगाकर (hole dug into the wall) घर में दाखिल हो चुका था, पास ही में छिपकर उनकी बातें सुन रहा था। उसने सोचा, ‘ये लोग पैसे कहाँ रखते होंगे?’
पति-पत्नी ने समझदारी दिखाते हुए धीरे-धीरे बात करना शुरू किया ताकि चोर को लगे कि वे सो नहीं रहे हैं, बल्कि किसी और विषय पर बात कर रहे हैं।
पत्नी ने धीरे से पूछा, “हमें अपने होने वाले बच्चे का क्या नाम रखना चाहिए?” पति ने फुसफुसाते हुए जवाब दिया, “अगर वह लड़का हुआ, तो हम उसे राम कहेंगे।”
पत्नी को यह नाम पसंद आया। उसने कहा, “राम? हाँ… यह अच्छा नाम है।”
पति ने अपनी योजना आगे बढ़ाते हुए कहा, “जब वह घर में होगा, तो मैं उसे धीरे से पुकारूँगा, ‘राम! राम!'” पत्नी ने पूछा, “लेकिन अगर वह आँगन में हुआ तो?” पति ने कहा, “तो मैं थोड़ी ज़ोर से चिल्लाऊँगा, ‘राम, राम!'” पत्नी बोली, “और अगर वह घर या आँगन में नहीं, बल्कि गली में हुआ तो?” पति ने मुस्कुराया और कहा, “ओह, तब मैं बहुत ज़ोर से आवाज़ दूँगा… ‘राऽऽम! राऽऽम!'”
चोर, जो सारी बातें सुन रहा था, मन ही मन झुंझला रहा था, “काश ये लोग यह बेवकूफी भरा खेल बंद करके अपने पैसों की बात करते! या कम से कम सो तो जाते!”
पत्नी ने योजना के अनुसार अपनी पूरी ताकत से चिल्लाया: “राऽऽम! राऽऽम!”
गाँव का कोतवाल, जिसका नाम राम था, वह अपनी नियमित गश्त पर था। जब उसने इतनी ज़ोर से अपना नाम पुकारे जाने की आवाज़ सुनी, तो वह तुरंत उसी घर की ओर भागा।
कोतवाल ने देखा कि दीवार में सेंध लगी हुई है। उसने सोचा, “ओह, ओह! किसी चोर ने इस घर में सेंध लगाई है।”
जैसे ही वह घर के अंदर घुसा, उसने देखा कि एक अधेड़ आदमी (चोर) खड़ा है। कोतवाल ने उसे पकड़ लिया और चिल्लाया, “तुम्हें गिरफ्तार किया जाता है!”
पति-पत्नी, जो अभी भी बिस्तर में थे, खुशी से उछल पड़े। पति बोला, “यह राम है! उसने हमें सुन लिया!” पत्नी ने कहा, “योजना काम कर गई! हम बच गए!”
